What is a Blower Door Test?

An APS, SRP or TEP certified energy auditors use blower door tests to help determine a home’s airtightness.

Reasons for improving the tightness of the house:

  • Reducing energy consumption due to air leakage
  • Avoiding moisture problems
  • Avoiding unwanted hot or cold air to enter the house from the outside
  • Improving the air quality of the home by stopping the outdoor air pollution form coming in

How does a Door Blower Test Work?

Blower Door TestA blower door is a powerful fan that mounts into the frame of an exterior door. The fan pulls air out of the house, lowering the air pressure inside. The higher outside air pressure then flows in through all unsealed cracks and openings. The auditors may use a smoke pencil to detect air leaks. These tests determine the air infiltration rate of a building.

Blower doors consist of a frame and flexible panel that fit in a doorway, a variable-speed fan, a pressure gauge to measure the pressure differences inside and outside the home, and an airflow manometer and hoses for measuring airflow.

Diagram of a blower door. The parts of the blower door are labeled as follows: exterior door frame (around the outside edge of the door), temporary covering (over the surface of the door), and adjustable frame (just inside the exterior door frame). An air pressure gauge, a small vertical rectangle with three round gauges inside, is alongside of the door. The top gauge is connected by a tube to the temporary covering, and the bottom two gauges are connected to a fan sitting at the bottom of the door. The caption reads: Diagnostic Tools. Testing the airtightness of a home using a special fan called a blower door can help to ensure that air sealing work is effective. Often, energy efficiency incentive programs, such as the DOE/EPA ENERGY STAR® Program, require a blower door test (usually performed in less than an hour) to confirm the tightness of the house.
There are two types of blower doors: calibrated and uncalibrated. It is important that auditors use a calibrated door. This type of blower door has several gauges that measure the amount of air pulled out of the house by the fan. Uncalibrated blower doors can only locate leaks in homes. They provide no method for determining the overall tightness of a building. The calibrated blower door’s data allow the auditor to quantify the amount of air leakage and the effectiveness of any air-sealing job.

What will the energy auditor do in the home?

The energy auditor will perform the following steps to prepare your home for a blower door test:

  • Close windows and open interior doors
  • Turn down the thermostats on heaters and water heaters
  • Cover ashes in wood stoves and fireplaces with damp newspapers
  • Shut fireplace dampers, fireplace doors, and wood stove air intakes.

APS, SRP, & TEP Energy Audits

Benefits of an TEP, SRP, APS Energy Audit

A Home Energy Audit will:

  • Will SAVE YOU MONEY
  • Will save you 20%-30% or more on your heating & cooling costs.
  • Will help you make a substantial savings on your electricity bills.
  • Will increase the comfort of your home.
  • Will improve the air quality of your home.
  • Will increase the resale value of your home.
  • Reduce your homes’ impact on the environment.
  • Qualify you for Tax Breaks*.

Save Money on Your Energy Bills

A BPI (Building Performance Institute) Certified home energy audit professional is trained to pinpoint the areas of your home where energy is being wasted and used inefficiently. More importantly, the report will prioritize cost-effective improvement opportunities that will pay financial dividends every time your utility bill arrives.

Increase Your Comfort

When you implement home improvements recommended by an APS, SRP or TEP Certified professional, you will literally feel the difference. Air sealing the building shell, sealing leaky air handler ducts, adding insulation, or replacing that old furnace or air conditioner will make your home a more pleasant place to be.

Increase Your Home’s Resale Value

For every $1 decrease in annual energy costs, the market value of a home increases by $20, according to a study published in the Appraisal Journal. If you decrease your energy costs by $300 per year, the value of your home increases by $6,000. APS and SRP Certified Energy Audit professionals can verify measurable results of the improvements performed.

Improve Your Home’s Marketability

With rising fuel costs, home buyers are seriously considering the house’s operating expenses. Measures to lower utility bills are valuable home improvements that reap dividends month after month. A home buyer will also have confidence that the house has been optimally maintained when you show it was audited by a BPI ENERGY STAR Certified professional and retrofitted by an APS or SRP Qualified Energy Audit Contractor. You’re more likely to make a faster sale for a higher price.

Uncover Hidden Problems

A home energy audit involves a thorough inspection of your home, which can uncover hidden structural and safety problems before they cause major damage. For example, improper ventilation can cause mold or mildew growth, which you may not discover until it becomes severe and costly repairs are required. An SRP, APS & TEP Certified professional can prevent problems before they affect your health or damage your home.

Help the Environment

By using less energy, you reduce the amount of pollution and greenhouse gasses that are created in the production of electricity and the fuels we burn. You can feel good about the energy (and money) you’re saving because you’re doing your part for the environment.

Take Advantage of Government Incentives

While you don’t necessarily need a home energy audit in order to take advantage of government tax incentives and rebates, your APS, SRP or TEP Certified Energy Audit professional can show you which cost-effective improvements make the most sense for your home. With the recommendations from your energy audit report and tax incentive information, you can make the right decisions as to which measures will pay the biggest return on your investment – and have the government help you do it.

Invest in a Sure Money-Maker

Investing in your home’s energy efficiency takes money. Fortunately, your return on investment is around 16% per year, after taking into account the money you spent on the improvements. As energy prices rise, so will your return on investment. It will likely be your most successful investment, without any risk. A BPI Certified professional could help put more money in your pocket than your stock broker!

A home or business energy assessment, also known as an energy audit, is the first step to assess how much energy your home or business consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. An assessment will show you problems that may, when corrected, reduce your electric bill and save you significant amounts of money over time.

A home or business energy checkup helps owners determine where you are losing energy and money – and how such problems can be corrected to make the building more energy efficient. A professional technician – often called an energy auditor – can give your home or business an energy audit.

For just $99, the SRP and APS Home Energy Audit inspection will identify improvements that can increase your indoor comfort and decrease energy costs.  In most cases, minor repairs and improvements can increase your efficiency by as much as 20%!

  1. Schedule the energy audit and diagnose the problems.

  2. Make the suggested improvements to your home or business.

  3. Perform the follow-up inspection to verify the effectiveness.

  4. Claim your rebates and enjoy the comfort of your home.
